The borders for the tatami are used to cover the seam where the top mat (omote) is stitched onto the bottom core. There are 4 levels of border as given below. It is possible to order tatami without a border but because more work is involved in hiding the seam the cost is more than mats with a border
Border Group 1 – Standard border
Border Group 2 – Higher quality cotton – add £4 per mat
Border Group 3 – Superior cotton – add £6 per mat
Border 4 – Premium cotton – add £8 per mat
