New techniques in paper have allowed the Japanese to make a tatami cover from woven paper that looks very similar to woven grass but which can be made in a great variety of colour. The photo shows a paper tatami omote on the left next to a natural grass omote on the right. Although more hard wearing than the grass mats the paper does not have the wonderful fragrance associated with the natural igusa grass.
